Becoming a teacher in New York overview…

Becoming a teacher in New York will prove to be a challenging, yet rewarding career path for those who strive to question the traditional straightforward approach to teaching. Teachers in New York earn one of the highest salaries in the nation and pride themselves on anything but. History has proven New York to be the mecca of America, and the teachers of New York continue educating one of the most diverse school systems in America. Ranking fourth for in the country for diversity, a teacher or educator in New York will always be at the forefront of evolution within the industry. The vast opportunities remain endless and unspoken for. The right time to become a teacher in New York is now.

Joining the teaching industry In New York…

New York, being the third most populated state in the country and New York City being the most populated city, proves becoming a teacher for the state of New York to be an exciting, challenging yet innovative career. Diversity within the New York school system also allows teachers and educators to easily explore new avenues and teaching methods landing them on the forefront of education.

Due to the large quantity of diversity and the large population within the state, earning your bachelor or masters degree in New York will only propel the teacher and student to both become future leaders. There is no other state that compares to New York and the teachers are no different. Catering to one of the largest areas for immigration, teachers in New York understand the importance of multidimensional teaching. In other words, not one student is alike nor is one teacher. Embracing differences and including them within the teaching curriculum, is one of the many talents a teacher in New York posses.

Teachers in New York are recognized for the hard work, determination and rewarded accordingly. Fifteen weeks of vacation per calendar year, outstanding benefits and 401K programs. Teachers in New York are also paid well above the average. There are incentives to teach in areas where the teacher ratio is low or areas that do not attract the majority of teachers.

The Next Steps and the Journey Ahead…

Beginning or advancing a career as a teacher in New York begins with knowing the proper steps and requirements. Due to the lack of current teachers in New York, or those with bachelor’s degree, the chance to stand out and impact is monumental. Those who already hold a bachelor’s degree should consider earning master’s degree, which would allow insight to the bigger picture, more complex issues and implement change.

The steps below are here to assist our future teachers of New York with informative, current and relevant information.

  • All states require earning a bachelor’s degree. The state of New York does require additional course work or credits. Depending on the subject, typically an additional 30 course work hours/credits are needed.
  • Apply for the teacher certification Teacher Preparation Program. Because these vary by subject, when contacting schools be informative on the subject.
  • If a bachelor’s degree is already earned, inquire on the Transitional Alternative path. Remember this is only if a degree is not in teaching or education.
  • If a bachelor’s degree is already earned in teaching or education, apply directly for a teacher’s certificate to teach. New York considers a teaching certificate outside of the state, to be the same as earning one within.
  • Complete the following tests: LAST, ATS-W and CSTs. For more information about these tests, inquire with the schools below.
  • Lastly, contact schools to understand how to take the next step. Remember, these schools are here to help and are equipped with options to cater your needs.

Given the endless amounts of options one has in the pursuit of a teaching career (Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, teacher certification, administration, to name a few), there has never been a better time to use the power of teaching and becoming involved in shaping our nations future.
